Who would have thought Sean Penn was any sort of a serious actor in his early movie days. You just would not have expected him to spread his wings and become the kind of performer that he is. This recent movie caps off the last several he has done. He just keeps getting better. No longer in a support role he leads the way with his new DVD release. His skills and training shine through in a fully humanized character. This is a complete change from his start in movies.

Harvey Milk was a political figure. This movie is a statement about his private and public life. It is backed up by actual true events. You hear about gay rights today, well thirty years ago they were in the beginning stages and the fact that everyone knew that Milk was gay is the clincher. He was elected into office in California for most of the 70's.

Penn does a great job in this role. He smiles a lot, as did the man he is portraying Harvey Milk, and quite honestly, I have seen pictures of the real Harvey Milk, and Penn looks stunningly like him in this film. The amazing thing is that Penn still looks young, allowing him the ability to play roles of younger men, with the wisdom and experience of an older actor, making his performance in at least this film darn near flawless.

You should not think this is a movie only for the gay community. It is an incredible drama that pulls you into a realistic 70's America including a little action and some eyeopening shocks. It is an emotional movie with characters that have issues that you can relate to. You will feel for them.

This movie qualifies as a drama in real life. For a movie based on true happenings this one is really quite good. The characters are as real as people today and the film is so very seventies too. Although there is a lot about the gay rights issues, it leans more to giving your all for what you think is important. That alone makes it a winner no matter what your age. So, if you want to see a life story that is very good then buy the DVD, you will want to share the experience with others.
